The Best Time to Start Couples Therapy

I truly love working with couples. There’s something powerful about helping two people become more present with each other, heal old wounds, and rediscover what it means to show respect and care. I get to witness partners learn how their emotions and nervous systems operate—and how those systems interact. I see them take accountability, shift long-standing patterns, and find their way back to connection. It’s a privilege that fills me with hope.

Here’s what I’ve learned after years of working with couples: anything is possible when both people are willing to do the work. And because of that, I never assume I know how a story will end. Relationships can surprise us.

But I’ll also be honest—there’s a part of couples work that’s deeply heartbreaking.

About a third of the time, couples reach out too late. One partner has already emotionally checked out or quietly decided the relationship is over. They may not have said it aloud yet, but their heart has started to shut down. In these situations, therapy often becomes about understanding, healing, and—when needed—separating with clarity and grace.

What I really love is when couples come in early.

Before the hurt runs too deep.

Before resentment calcifies into contempt.

Before patterns become ingrained and harder to change.

They come in because they’ve started to notice something:

  • Arguments that repeat without resolution
  • Distance that’s slowly growing
  • A sense that something isn’t quite working—even if things still feel mostly okay

They come because they care enough to take action.

And that early effort? It makes all the difference.

So, when is the best time to start couples therapy?

Don’t wait until you’re in crisis.

Come when you begin to notice that something’s off.

Come when communication feels strained.

Come when you want to reconnect before the distance grows.

Even just 3–4 sessions of couples therapy can shift the trajectory of your relationship.

Whether you’re hoping to rebuild trust, deepen your connection, improve communication, or simply feel more seen and understood, help is here.

And I would be honoured to support you.

I hope to meet you soon.
