Choosing a Therapist: Trusting Your Gut

Finding the right therapist can feel overwhelming, but choosing a therapist is often more personal—and more intuitive—than most people realize. Research consistently shows that the strongest predictor of successful therapy isn’t a specific technique or approach. It’s the connection you feel with the therapist sitting across from you.

Every therapist brings their own style, training, and personality to the room. Some are gentle and reflective. Others are more direct, structured, or challenging. These differences matter, but beyond any method or modality, there’s an intangible feeling that tells you when the fit is right.

When choosing a therapist, it can help to pause and ask yourself a few simple questions:

• Do I feel seen and understood?
• Does this person “get” me, or at least try to?
• Do I feel safe enough to be honest?
• Do I feel gently pushed in the ways I want to grow?

Your gut is a powerful guide in the process of choosing a therapist. If something feels off, you’re allowed to listen to that. And it’s absolutely okay to meet with a therapist once and decide not to go back—no explanation needed. You don’t owe us anything. You owe yourself the best possible match.

Therapy works best when the connection feels solid, supportive, and authentic. So give yourself permission to explore, to be selective, and to trust your instincts when choosing a therapist. The right fit isn’t just comforting; it’s transformative.
